NBA All Star Game Details
The 2018 NBA All-Star festivities will be held in Los Angeles, and the All-Star Game will be played at the Staples Center, home to both the Clippers and the Lakers. Los Angeles has hosted the All-Star game six times—more than any other city. The game was last played in LA in 2011. The game is a scrimmage between the Eastern and Western Conferences, in which the best players from each conference put their offensive talents on display in a high-scoring match.
All-Star events include the Rising Stars Challenge, which pits rookies and second-year players against each other; the NBA All Star Celebrity Game, in which teams of teams of former basketball players, team owners, actors, and pop stars play in a scrimmage match; and the Skills Challenge, which includes the Three-Point Contest and Slam Dunk Contest.
The Rising Stars game will begin the All-Star Weekend on Friday, February 16. The Skills Competition, Three-Point Contest, and Dunk Contest will take place on Saturday, and All-Star Game will finish the weekend on Sunday.
Last season’s All-Star Game took place at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans and was the highest scoring All-Star Game ever. The Western Conference defeated the Eastern Conference 192 to 182 (there was no defense to be found). Anthony Davis—of the hometown Pelicans—was the 2017 All-Star MVP. Davis scored an All-Star Game record 52 points. Fan voting is a key component in determining the starting lineups for the All-Star Game. The Cavaliers (LeBron James and Kyrie Irving for the East) and Warriors (Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant for the West) each had two players in their conference’s starting five. Davis, the only New Orleans player selected, also was a started for the West.
In the Three-Point Contest, Eric Gordon of the Houston Rockets defeated Kyrie Irving of the Cavaliers. Glenn Robinson III of the Indiana Pacers won the Slam Dunk Contest, defeating Derrick Jones Jr. in the final round.
